Using the new ID card as a loyalty card requires IT developments

31.07.2025 | 12:22

The Estonian Information System Authority (RIA) reminds you that the Estonian card manufacturer IDEMIA issues ID cards with a new chip platform from the beginning of July. To use these cards electronically or as loyalty cards, service providers must develop their IT systems.

In order for service providers to be able to offer the loyalty card functionality for the new ID cards, the necessary changes must be made to their information systems to ensure compatibility with all cards in use.

For full information on the latest versions of the ID software, the related changes, the supported operating systems, and possible shortcomings, please visit the ID website.

Starting from November, ID cards in use will be on three technical chip platforms:
•    IDEMIA chip version up to Cosmo v8.2 (ID card, issued before July 2025)
•    IDEMIA chip version up to CosmoX (ID card, issued after July 2025)
•    Thales (ID card, issued from 16 November 2025)

It is important to note that starting from 16 November 2025, ID cards manufactured by Thales will be issued, which differ from previous cards in terms of both the chip platform and the software solution.
Inevitably, this will require some technical changes. More detailed information about upcoming changes to Thales’ ID cards and the necessary actions can be found on the ID website.
